It feels like a very sombre Monday. Despite the fact its a public holiday, I'm feeling a little melancholy. It could be something to do with the fact that after three months of unemployment, I start a new job tomorrow. With that comes some apprehension of change. I am really thrilled to finally be back in the market and it is, in many ways, my dream job. But it does feel a little like the first day at a new school. Will the teachers be hard on me, will I understand the classwork and most importantly, will the other kids like me. I'm sure it will be just great - I have probably just become too accustomed to sleeping-in and the other customs that come with unemployment. I hope that despite being in work full-time, I will still be able to continue with and all things. Perhaps, the postings may be less regular until I get into a routine, but I hope you continue reading. As always, if you have any suggestions, do drop me a comment or an email.
Anyway, this song seems to fit my mood today. I've first heard the album Coming From Reality a few years ago and always thought Rodriguez was huge icon in his heyday. Turns out he actually was a seventies folk icon who never really was. He never made an impact on America and gave up on pursuing a career as a musician. I was really surprised to learn that he actually only recorded two albums, Cold Fact being the other, and that the sales were so poor it resulted in his label dropping him. His songs are politically charged and deal with anti-establishmentarianism and the struggle facing ordinary Detroit folk.
After a little digging, I found out that the documentary film Searching For Sugar Man is being released later this year. The movie follows the dour efforts of two South African fans who try tracking down more information about what happened to their idol - Rodriguez.
